GuidesHow to spot a ghost job in 60 seconds
A quick checklist to tell if a job ad is real before you spend an evening applying.
Oct 16, 2026
Around 1 in 5 online job ads may not lead to a real hire. Here's a 60-second check.
- Check the date. Older than 30–45 days? Yellow flag.
- Search the title + company. Posted again and again? Orange flag.
- Look for a real team. A named manager, a team, real responsibilities? Good sign.
- Look for pay. No range at all, especially where the law requires one? Yellow flag.
- Check the company news. Layoffs or a hiring freeze? Red flag.
- Check their careers page. If the job isn't there, it may be gone.
Two or more flags? Put your energy somewhere else, or reach out to someone at the company before applying.
Zoe does this check automatically on every job she finds, and on any job you paste in.
