The job-ad translator: what those phrases really mean

Fast-paced. Many hats. Competitive salary. Zoe translates the most common job-ad phrases, with a wink and a few honest red flags.

Job ads have their own language. Here's Zoe's dictionary. (Mostly joking. Mostly.)

They say It might mean What to check
"Competitive salary" They'd rather not say Ask for the range early
"Salary: depends on experience" Depends on… everything? Look up similar roles first
"Fast-paced environment" Nobody has time to train you Ask how onboarding works
"You'll wear many hats" Possibly three jobs in a trench coat Ask what success looks like in 90 days
"We're like a family" Lovely, or boundaries are blurry Ask about hours and time off
"Unlimited time off" Unlimited, until you try to take it Ask how much people actually take
"Rockstar / ninja wanted" They want energy; the title is a vibe Read the actual responsibilities
"Entry level, 5+ years required" They're not sure what they want Apply only if the rest fits
"Self-starter" You may not get much direction Ask who you'd report to
"Work hard, play hard" Long hours, plus drinks Ask about a normal week

None of these are automatically bad. They're just questions worth asking.
