TrendsGhost jobs in 2026: about 1 in 5 job ads may not be real
What ghost jobs are, how common they are, why companies post them, and five quick ways to spot one before you waste an evening.
You found the perfect job. You spent two hours on the application. Then… nothing. Not even a "no thanks".
Sometimes that's because the job was never really there.
What is a ghost job?
A ghost job is a job ad that stays online even though nobody is actively hiring for it. The role might already be filled, frozen, saved for an internal candidate, or posted "just in case" to collect resumes.
How common are they?
Nobody has a perfect count, but the numbers are big:
- About 1 in 5. An analysis by the hiring platform Greenhouse estimated that roughly 18–22% of online job postings are ghost jobs. (Greenhouse, via FOX)
- Most recruiters admit it. In a 2025 LiveCareer survey of 918 HR professionals, a large majority said they post ghost jobs at least occasionally. That's a self-reported survey, so treat it as a signal, not gospel.
Why do companies post them?
- To look like they're growing.
- To keep a pile of resumes "for later".
- Because a budget got frozen and nobody took the ad down.
- Because the job is going to someone inside the company, but the rules say it has to be posted.
5 ways to spot a ghost job
- It's old. Posted more than 30–45 days ago and still "actively recruiting"? Be careful.
- It keeps coming back. Same title, same company, reposted every few weeks.
- It's vague. No team, no manager, no real responsibilities, no pay range.
- The company isn't hiring anywhere else. No other open roles, recent layoffs, or a hiring freeze in the news.
- Nobody can tell you who the manager is. Real jobs usually have a real person behind them.
How Zoe helps
Zoe checks every job before it reaches you: how long it's been up, whether it keeps getting reposted, and whether the page is still live. If a job looks like a ghost, she labels it Skip it and tells you why, so you spend your evenings on jobs that can actually hire you.
