Why it feels harder to get hired in 2026 (it's not just you)

Applications per hire have roughly tripled since 2021 while hiring slowed. Here's what the numbers say and what actually works now.

Oct 16, 2026

If job hunting feels like shouting into a hurricane, the data agrees with you.

The numbers

  • About 291 applications per hire. Data from the recruiting platform Ashby puts the average at roughly 291 applications for every person hired in early 2026, about three times the 2021 level. (VisualCV summary)
  • Hiring slowed down. The US hires rate hit 3.1% in February 2026, its lowest since April 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics JOLTS survey.
  • Applications exploded. LinkedIn reported around 11,000 applications per minute in 2025, up about 45% in a year, partly because AI makes it easy to apply everywhere. (Semafor)
  • It takes longer. SHRM's 2025 benchmark puts average time-to-fill at about 44 days.

What that means for you

When everyone applies to everything, two things happen:

  1. Recruiters drown, so they skim faster.
  2. Generic applications all look the same, so they get ignored.

Applying to more jobs makes the problem worse. Applying to the right jobs, with an application that clearly fits, is how you get noticed.

What actually works now

  • Be picky. Five well-matched applications beat fifty random ones.
  • Tailor the top third of your resume to each job. That's what gets read first.
  • Skip the dead ends (old posts, reposts, vague ads).
  • Follow up after a week. Politely. Once.
  • Use your network for the jobs you really want: referrals are hired at several times the rate of cold applicants.
