GuidesThe follow-up email after an interview (templates that don't sound desperate)
When to follow up, what to say, and three short templates you can copy.
Many job seekers say they've been ghosted after an interview (61% in Greenhouse's 2024 survey). A polite follow-up won't fix that every time, but it helps.
When
- Thank-you note: same day or next morning.
- Check-in: about a week after the date they said they'd decide, or 7–10 days if they didn't say.
- Last nudge: one more, a week later. Then let it go.
Template 1: thank you (same day)
Hi [Name], thank you for the conversation today. I enjoyed hearing about [specific thing]. It made me even more excited about the role. If it's useful, I'm happy to share more about [relevant project]. Best, [You]
Template 2: check-in (after a week)
Hi [Name], I hope your week's going well. I wanted to check in on the [Role] position and whether there's anything else I can share. I'm still very interested. Thanks, [You]
Template 3: last nudge
Hi [Name], just a final check-in on the [Role] role. If you've gone another way, no problem at all, and I'd love to stay in touch for the future. Best, [You]
