Guides20 smart questions to ask at the end of an interview
What to ask when they say 'Any questions for us?', so you look curious, serious and learn whether you really want the job.
"No, I think you covered everything" is the weakest way to end an interview. Good questions show you're serious, and they help you decide if you want the job.
Pick 3. Ask the most important one first, in case time runs out.
About the job
- What does a great first 90 days look like in this role?
- What's the biggest challenge the person in this job will face?
- What does a normal week look like?
- How will you measure success in this role after a year?
- Why is this job open? (New role, or did someone leave?)
About the team
- Who will I work with most closely?
- How does the team usually share work and decisions?
- What do people on the team enjoy most about working here?
- How do you give feedback to people on the team?
About growth
- Where have people in this role moved to next?
- Is there a training or learning budget?
- How often do pay and performance reviews happen?
About the company
- What are the company's top priorities this year?
- What's changed most here in the last year?
- What makes someone successful here, and what makes someone struggle?
For the interviewer personally
- What do you enjoy most about working here?
- What surprised you when you joined?
To close strongly
- Is there anything about my background you'd like me to explain more?
- What are the next steps, and when can I expect to hear back?
- Is there anything that would stop you from moving me forward?
Number 20 takes courage, but it gives you a chance to fix a doubt before you leave the room.
Questions to avoid in a first interview
- "How much holiday do I get?" (save it for the offer stage)
- "When can I work from home?" (ask how the team works instead)
