The recruiter phone screen: how to pass the first call

What recruiters check in the first 20 minutes, the 5 questions they'll ask, and how to handle the salary question.

Oct 17, 2026

The first call is usually short, 15 to 30 minutes, with a recruiter, not the hiring manager. Their job is to check the basics and decide if you move forward.

What they're checking

  1. Can you do the job, on paper?
  2. Do you really want this job?
  3. Are your salary hopes in their range?
  4. Can you start when they need you, and work where they need you?
  5. Are you pleasant to talk to?

The 5 questions you'll almost certainly hear

  1. "Walk me through your background." Use the 60-second version. Formula here.
  2. "Why are you interested in this role?" One reason about the company, one about the job.
  3. "Why are you looking to move?" Talk about what you want next, not what you're escaping.
  4. "What are your salary expectations?" See below.
  5. "When could you start?" Be honest about your notice period.

Handling the salary question

Ask first:

"Could you share the budgeted range for this role?"

If they ask again, give a range with your target at the bottom. Full salary guide.

Questions to ask the recruiter

  • What's the timeline and how many rounds are there?
  • Who will I meet next?
  • What's the hiring manager most looking for?
  • Is the role remote, hybrid or in the office?

The recruiter wants you to succeed. They get paid when roles are filled. Ask them for tips for the next round. Many will tell you exactly what to focus on.
